LIF2.0 project update: Creating an interactive platform with insights into the spread of COVID-19 and the vaccination progress

AI Governance

Copenhagen, Denmark

In March 2021, 2021.AI announced its partnership with Dutch Artificial Intelligence software company, SemLab and health experts & doctors at Radboud University Medical Centre in the LIF2.0 project. 2021.AI has been developing an interactive platform that will provide up-to-date actionable insights into the spread of COVID-19 and the vaccination progress. It will be used across the EU and is delivered through 2021.AI’s GRACE AI platform.

With the support from the EUREKA grant, the LIF2.0 project was started. 2021.AI and its two partners have been developing a platform that enables the integration and implementation of disparate data to create better insights to support decision-making as the fight against COVID-19 continues.

Aim of the project

The project, LIF2.0, aims to develop a short-term response to COVID-19 needs in industry and public organizations by offering a real-time COVID-19 driven data platform covering European-wide aggregated content from a vast amount of sources.

What are we working on?

During the last half year, 2021.AI has been working on developing an interactive platform that is consolidating and analyzing COVID-19 data. The aggregated data, consolidated in a single platform will enable decision-makers in the EU to react faster and make informed decisions.

The first step in the project was to research reliable COVID-19 data sources. Many data sources were taken into consideration, but they had to be proven as trustworthy channels in order to be included in the platform. Some of the data sources are for example: government Twitter pages, official government websites, newspapers, Google mobility data, SARS-CoV-2 Waste Water Surveillance data, etc.

After the data is collected, sentiment analysis and statistical analytics is performed in order to extract valuable information from the data sets. In order to support effective decision making and quick responses to new events and challenges, the platform has to provide an easy overview of the current data. This is achieved through a single visualization application that consolidates data and offers fast insights into the current state of COVID-19 in the EU.

“Utilizing our AI platform GRACE and state-of-the-art language models, we have been able to continuously collect and analyse the sentiment of the textual data that is being produced by news outlets and twitter users every minute. With this data we are able to gain an understanding of how the general public responds to the many unprecedented political measures we have seen since the Corona breakout. Personally, I believe that public entities can benefit from insights like these, and use it to support the decision making of the future.” – Morten Thomsen, Data Scientist at 2021.AI

Next steps

The remaining work consists of further customization of the visualization application, application deployment and final testing. It is important to customize the application so data is clearly displayed, which will help in quick responses and support of the effective decisions. The application will be public within the next couple of months, which will of course be published on our blog and social media.
