Trained on hospital data, the new AI models will answer pre-operational questions from patients while maintaining the highest legal and ethical standards.
Funded by the European fund for regional development Erhversfyrtårnet, 2021.AI and Rigshospitalet have announced a collaboration to implement AI in Rigshospitalets Department of Oto-rhino-laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and Audiology (“ENT”), providing information and support for thyroid cancer patients.
Located in Copenhagen, Rigshospitalet is the largest and most specialized hospital in Denmark, serving 75,000 inpatients each year. As a critical center for teaching and research, Rigshospitalet prioritizes innovation in a continual effort to provide world-leading healthcare.
“We are excited to be able to try new and innovative initiatives at the Department of Otolaryngology at Rigshospitalet,” said Mads Klokker, Head of ENT Head & Neck Surgery and Audiology at Rigshospitalet. “Through our fast-tracked collaboration, we will investigate how AI can support patients suspected of having thyroid cancer. Our goal remains unchanged: to ensure that patients feel secure during treatment.”
With data provided entirely by Rigshospitalet, 2021.AI used techniques such as Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), data-preprocessing, prompt engineering and fine-tuning of a large language model, or LLM, to provide pre-operational information and answer patient questions.
Using 2021.AI’s GRACE Platform, which supports compliance with legal regulations and ethical guidelines, the LLM will improve the treatment journey for patients and healthcare providers without using patients’ personal information.
“With the help of AI, we can provide support and guidance even outside of our regular opening hours. The purpose is to create patient-centeredness, security, and tranquility for the patient, their loved ones, and ourselves as healthcare providers,” said Klokker. “We will also be able to learn about patient needs and thus clinical resource allocation, which is crucial for meeting future demographic pressures.”
